Sleep Regressions

Sleep regressions usually occur at 4 months, 8 months and 18 months of age. These “regressions” usually coincide with a leap forward in development. These can be physical or cognitive and the brain is processing a lot. They can also be caused by illness or a significant environmental change. These can include:

  • a growth spurt

  • teething

  • speech development

  • physical development (e.g. learning to walk)

  • starting at a childcare setting

  • illness

Signs of a sleep regression can include:

  • difficulty falling asleep

  • frequent night wakings

  • resisting daytime naps

  • grouchiness

Regressions tend to last between one and six weeks but generally ease off after around two weeks.
